What to do when you feel stuck in your career?

What do you do when you feel stuck in your career? Are you tired of having the same career year after year with no progress? If so then the time is now to get unstuck! It’s time to begin to dream again and regain hope of what your career can be! I once lost my dream of what I wanted out of my career and found myself in the cycle where every day Monday - Friday was the same.

The moment you stop dreaming and having a hope of where your career could be is when you get stuck.  Mindset is everything, what you think you are is what you will be. You can achieve anything, but you first must believe you can. So I’m going to share 10 tips to help you get unstuck in your career.

1. Your Thoughts Matter

Are your thoughts in line with what you want to achieve?  My Favorite saying is believe, and you receive! This is not to say that each day will be gumdrops and lollipops but you have to believe in what you’re pursuing. So make sure you stay positive and most importantly make sure you’re seeking a career you want.

2, What does getting unstuck mean to you?

Everyone will not have the same definition of what it means to be unstuck.  So before you create a plan of action, you have to decide what does that mean for you? So maybe for you, it’s switching careers, or getting a new certification or learning something new. Once you know what getting unstuck in your career looks like for you then you’re ready for step 3.

3. Create a Career Plan

How can you know where you want to go if you don’t have a plan?  So think about what’s the next position or goal you want to work towards and create a plan of action to get there. To get unstuck you have to have a step by step plan on how this will happen.

4. Get an Accountability Partner

Did you know that you’re more likely to accomplish your goals when you write them down and share them with an accountability partner?  I’ve been working with an Accountability Partner for well over a year now, and I can see that I’ve definitely accomplished more by having someone hold me accountable and pushing me to move beyond my comfort zone! So take time and think about who may be a good accountability partner to help you on this journey of getting unstuck!

5. Re-evaluate your plan

Now that you have an Accountability Partner go back and review your career plan with your Accountability Partner.  The key is to see if maybe you may need to revise your career plan or add additional steps to the plan.

6. Be Proactive!

Now the plan is created it’s time to take action.  Don’t want for opportunities to come create them. Be bold, be brave and work the plan!

7. Network – Make New Contacts

Whose in your network? It may be time to make some new contacts as you never know who knows who. Expanding your network will help you as you work on your career plan. Most importantly remember that networking is about building relationships.

8. Whose in your squad?

When you’re working on accomplishing goals you have to protect your energy, so you have to be mindful of the company you keep.  Are you surrounded around people who are supportive?  Connect with people who are also working towards accomplishing goals, that way you can help support and encourage each other.

9. Focus on one goal at a time…

Don’t overdo it…Keep it simple and focus on one goal at a time.  If you try to complete more than one goal at a time, you risk not completing any.

10.  Follow steps 1-9

“Success in life, to a great extent, is based on your willingness and ability to follow instructions.” - R.A. Vernon, D.Min.

So to get unstuck focus on completing steps 1-9 and be bold, be brave and don’t be afraid to chase your dreams! There’s only 3 response you can get a Yes, No, or Not Yet so be Fearless!  This isn't to say that getting unstuck will happen overnight, but if you follow the steps and work on them one at a time you'll be well on your way of achieving your goals!
